As a result of this interview, on the morning of the 29th Christie went to Canton by the 8 o'clock train; he located Zimmern at the Oriental Hotel on the 30th, and returned to Hong Kong by the "Tatshan" on the 31st, the two of then being arrested on arrival by the Police on suspicion of compli cá ty in the aurder. They were thereafter detained separately until April 2nd; one on the let and one on the 2nd made voluntary statement, On April 4th accused himself came up to Police Headquarters in company with his solicitor, as he had done also on March 25th, and was now detained and subsequently
charged.
Now, My Lord and Gentlemen of the Jury, that was the evidence as the Crown knew it when the accused was first brought before the Magistrate, and it was not until June that any further evidence as to the commission of this murder came into the possession of the Police.
On June 20th certain information led to the arrest of two other men, number 9 on your list, whom I have referred to and also number 10; the former being a private chauffeur employed by ir. Cooke, of Bimey Villas, the second a bus driver in the employ of the Hong Kong Hotel Company. Both will be called as witnesses.
